Everyone loves the smell of homemade chocolate chip cookies coming straight from the oven. Not only are homemade cookies filled with grandma’s love, but they’re also completely customizable to your preferred shape, flavor, and ingredients, allowing us to make the cookies of our dreams!

Our dogs love dog treats as much as they love cookies. They’ll sit, stay, and roll over for a bite of some turkey jerky, being wholeheartedly dedicated to getting their chops on something delicious! For them, homemade dog treats are just like homemade cookies. Not only do they smell and taste amazing, but they’re completely customizable to your dog’s every need.

In this blog, we’ll go over homemade dog treats and why they’re so beneficial to your pet. We’ll also let you in on a few secrets to how Crafted Dog Treats makes their treats, so you can make treats just like them yourself!

Why You Should Feed Your Dog Homemade Dog Treats

If your dog is like mine, they will follow you wherever you go- from the kitchen to the bathroom, and even to space if they could! With the amount of love they have for you, it’s only natural that we should give them some love back. Making your dog some fresh treats is a great way to show you love them! Here are a few more benefits to making your own dog treats:

  • Homemade dog treats are much safer for your pet to consume. They lack the paragraphs of ingredients found in store-bought treat bags, usually only containing 1-2 healthy ingredients. With the limited supply of ingredients put into homemade dog treats, your dog is consuming less processed foods and preservatives, allowing for a guilt-free snack.
  • Homemade dog treats taste much better!Everything tastes better when it’s fresh, whether it be your dog’sraw food dinner platter or freshly baked peanut butter treats. Not only are homemade dog treats fresh- but they can also be customized to your dog’s delight! You can add your pup’s favorite snacks, like peanut butter or carrots, to enhance the taste of their homemade treat.
  • Homemade dog treats can save you some money. The ingredients used to make homemade dog treats are usually inexpensive. Meats, peanut butter, and veggies are all things you can buy in large quantities for a low cost. Not only are these ingredients relatively cheap, but they’re also healthy!

What You Need to Make Homemade Dog Treats

Before you start making homemade dog treats, there are a few things you’ll need. The method we’ll be focusing on most in this blog is air-drying, a process where the moisture from raw meats is dried out and dehydrated. This makes a crunchy, natural treat for your pup, packed with proteins and vitamins from the dried meat.

To prepare for making your dog’s treats from home, prepare these items and ingredients:

  • Adehydrating machine designed to dehydrate food, anair fryer, OR an oven
  • Your pup’s favorite meats! A few examples of common meats you can dehydrate are…
    • Turkey breast
    • Beef tendon
    • Chicken feet
    • Salmon
    • Green-lipped Mussels

...that’s all! Making homemade treats for your pup is an affordable and easy process that could be customized depending on your dog’s health requirements and taste. Small things like smearing a bit ofdog-safe peanut butter on your dog’s dehydrated treats can bring the taste to another level!

How to Make Homemade Dog Treats Using an Airfryer

  1. Slice up the meat or vegetable you are using into thin slices. The thinner the meat is cut, the less time it will take to air-fry.
  2. Spray your air fryer trays with nonstick cooking spray and lay the slices of your ingredient on them in evenly spaced intervals.
  3. Cook your ingredient at around 200°F for 2 hours.
  4. Check to see if the treat is hard to the touch. If not, put it back in for 10-15 more minutes and check again.
  5. Give your dog to enjoy! Store treats in the refrigerator.

*Note: Depending on the ingredient being air fried, the amount of time and temperature you should cook the ingredient will vary. For some specific ingredients, you may want to find a recipe focused on that specific ingredient.
